WASHINGTON (AP) — According to a person familiar with the situation, former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows has been subpoenaed by the special counsel investigating former President Donald Trump’s efforts to overturn his loss in the 2020 election.
Meadows was served with the subpoena in late January, according to the source, as special counsel Jack Smith’s investigation into Trump and his allies’ efforts to keep him in office grew more intense. Meadows, as Trump’s final White House chief of staff, would be among the former president’s closest advisers called before the grand jury.
The demand for his testimony came before a separate subpoena issued as part of the investigation to former Vice President Mike Pence. Former Trump administration officials who have already testified before the grand jury include Pence’s former chief of staff Marc Short and counsel Greg Jacob.
The subpoena for Meadows could pave the way for more court battles between prosecutors and Trump’s lawyers, who have used executive privilege to try to prevent or delay the testimony of top aides in investigations into the former president. Pence intends to fight his subpoena by claiming that as vice president, he also served as president of the Senate and is therefore protected by the Constitution’s Speech or Debate clause, which protects members of Congress from being questioned in court about legislative acts.
